Nov 25 - Dec 17    Holiday Window Display Competition

More than 25 local businesses have decorated downtown Charleston storefronts for the Charleston Area Alliance's inaugural Holiday Window Decorating Contest, sponsored by WCHS-TV and Tony the Tailor. 

With twinkling lights, gigantic candy canes and colorful trees – the holiday window display competition aims to draw the masses to come downtown and shop small during the holiday season.

Starting on Small Business Saturday Nov. 25 and continuing through Dec. 17, you can vote on your favorite dressed up downtown window. The People's Choice winner will receive an advertising package on WCHS-TV.

Participating businesses are comprised of downtown businesses with physical storefronts as well as local companies who have partnered with existing downtown businesses or leasing agents to create a window vignettes in vacant storefronts. Many participants have also teamed up with artists, schools, churches and nonprofits to create a one-of-a-kind display.

Dec 5    Thrive 2017
Thrive is a community-based approach to supporting local entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs take the stage to present their crowdfunding pitch campaigns in a fast-paced, interactive and educational environment. 

Community members cast votes to support entrepreneurs, with the top vote-getting entrepreneur taking home a cash prize to scale up their operation. 

How does it work?

Whether you have a fantastic idea, are looking to expand or are a startup already operating – if you have a business or product that could use financial support, then apply to participate in Thrive. 
  • Entrepreneurs must complete an online application by Friday, Nov. 3. Click here to apply.
  • Applications are reviewed by an independent panel of judges who will select finalists to be featured at Thrive.
  • Leading up to the event, finalists meet with local business coaches to get tips and suggestions for their respective business plan presentations.
  • Finalists pitch business plans to promote their ideas and outline need for capital investment at Thrive.
  • Top vote-getting entrepreneur will take home cash prize to scale-up operations.
Where does capital investment come from?

Community members pay a $25 entry fee to attend Thrive, which gives them the opportunity to vote for an entrepreneur to support for capital investment.

Entry fees are combined with seed capital from our event sponsors including Dow, CAMC, Appalachian Power, Bowles Rice, the University of Charleston, Industrial Bolting, Terrell Ellis & Associates, Vision Shared for the top vote-getter's capital investment. Dec 7    Leadership Kanawha Valley 2017-2018

Leadership Kanawha Valley is a program to develop, support and connect emerging talent throughout the region. From young professionals to senior executives, the program gives participants the tools, knowledge, experiences and connections to enhance their community impact.

Sponsored by Frontier Communications and Thomas Health System, Leadership Kanawha Valley builds strong connections across private, public and nonprofit sectors and helps graduates find their place in the community. 

Through the eight-month program, participants learn about the issues shaping the community from the experts working on them, form lasting bonds with classmates who are active leaders and strengthen professional skills with a leadership development curriculum. The program works to inspire participants to become more impactful leaders and maintain involvement in the social, business and political fabric of the community.

Since 2004, more than 325 have joined the Leadership Kanawha Valley alumni network.

Dec 7    Stewart & Thaxton Ribbon Cutting
Stewart & Thaxton Plastic Surgery will mark the opening of its new downtown Charleston facility at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 at 505 Capitol St.
 
The newly renovated 4,000 + square foot facility features the private practice of board certified plastic surgeons Andy Stewart and Jeff Thaxton, an in-house operating suite, and a full-service medical spa.
 
The ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed by a reception and an open house. Guests can receive expert advice on anti-aging treatment options, as well as a chance to enter various raffles, including one raffle for a set of breast implants.

Dec 7    Business After Hours - MVB Bank 2017

Join the Charleston Area Alliance and MVB Bank for a holiday-themed Business After Hours on December 7, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. All ticket prices include complimentary food and beverages.

MVB's Charleston branch features state-of-the-art interactive technology in both the lobby and drive-thru. The Bank's lobby and offices feature paintings by local West Virginia artists and an engaging display of historic photographs portraying neighborhoods near the Capitol, along the Kanawha River and in downtown Charleston. 

Connect with colleagues and network with business and community leaders at this monthly event, hosted by Charleston Area Alliance members.

Dec 8    Tim Trent Insurance Agency Ribbon Cutting

The Tim Trent Insurance Agency, a local Allstate agency agency, will celebrate the opening of its new downtown Charleston office with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at 1320 Kanawha Blvd. E in Charleston. 

Trent recently acquired the former West Virginia Federal Credit Union building. Built in 1965, the iconic 60-feet-in-diameter building will house the Tim Trent Insurance Agency and offer space available for commercial leases.

Trent, an insurance industry professional, matches customers with the proper coverage for their lifestyle. Trent assists customers with auto coverage as well as homeowners, motorcycle, boat, renters, life, business and more forms of insurance.

“We’re eager to bring competitively priced insurance products to Southern West Virginia residents,” Trent said. “Our team is here to help meet your exact needs.”

1320 Kanawha Boulevard is situated by the intersection of Bradford Street. Amenities include Kanawha River views, varying sizes of flexible rental space and a drive-thru window, among many others.

Dec 15    Lunch & Learn - Blockchain & Cryptocurrency 101

This Lunch & Learn will provide a basic understanding of cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin and Ether, including their origin, growth, and use as a store of value and potentially a day-to-day currency.  The presentation also will discuss some of the controversies and legal issues surrounding the currencies.  Finally, the presentation will discuss blockchain technology, its use in the financial industry, and its potential implementation in other industries both here and abroad.

This Lunch & Learn is presented by Nicholas Mooney, an attorney at Spilman Thomas & Battle; and Dustin Davies, chief technology officer at Spilman Thomas & Battle.  

Dustin Davies, Spilman Thomas & Battle CTOMooney's primary area of practice is consumer financial services litigation in federal and state courts. He has devoted all of his time for the past 17 years to that practice area. In the past, he also has practiced energy law and general litigation.

Davies serves in dual roles as CTO and with Next Consulting, Spilman’s wholly owned subsidiary intended to help organizations identify and reach the next chapters in their evolution.

Dec 21    Aronfield Agency Ribbon Cutting
Aronfield Agency, a full-service creative marketing and advertising agency, will mark the opening of its new office location at 208 Hale Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and holiday party on Thursday, December 21.
 
The ribbon cutting will take place at 4:30 p.m. The holiday party will follow at 6 p.m.

Musician Emmalea Deal will perform and mixed media art from Beckley Underground will be displayed as part of ArtWalk.

Celebrating its 15th year, Downtown Charleston ArtWalk is a free self-guided walking tour of Charleston’s shops, galleries and businesses featuring regional art and performances. Typically held the third Thursday of each month, participating shops and organizations extend their hours for browsing, shopping and mingling.

For details about this month's ArtWalk, visit the Downtown Charleston ArtWalk website for the monthly participating venue map. Participating shops are located in Downtown Charleston and feature a variety of art – from paintings and sculptures to photography and music.

Attendees can stroll along at their own pace, dip in and out of stores and stop off along the way for a bite to eat at a downtown restaurant.
