The Charleston Area Alliance will present its second Downtown Open pop-up putt-putt course June 24 - Saturday, July 8 along the sidewalks of downtown Charleston. 

Each hole is sponsored and customized by local business sponsors, resulting in a unique one-of-a kind miniature golf course. Pickup a scorecard and map and play for free. Bring your own putter and ball or borrow from participating businesses.

Jul 12    Lunch & Learn - Medical Marijuana Use & Employee Drug Testing

Richard M. Wallace, Littler Mendelson Labor Law AttorneyRecent changes in the law have dramatically altered the landscape for the way West Virginia employers will handle drug usage and drug testing in the workplace. This Lunch & Learn Wednesday, July 12 will provide an in-depth discussion of the West Virginia medical marijuana law and the West Virginia Safer Workplace Act which provides greater latitude for employers to drug test employees.  Presented by Richard M. Wallace, Littler Mendelson labor law attorney and shareholder, the Lunch & Learn will offer practical advice for implementing policies and procedures in your organization to ensure compliance with the overlapping obligations contained in these statutes and other relevant state and federal laws. 

Wallace focuses his practice on both employment litigation and traditional labor law. He has experience in all phases of employment litigation in both state and federal courts, and his trial experience includes matters involving race, age, sex and disability discrimination; wrongful discharge; workplace harassment; violations of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act and breaches of the duty of loyalty. His extensive traditional labor law experience includes serving as lead negotiator in collective bargaining negotiations, handling numerous labor arbitrations, and providing assistance and advice prior to and during union organizing campaigns and strikes. He has served as lead counsel in multiple labor-related litigation matters in federal court and represented numerous employers in proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, including unfair labor practice proceedings, and unit clarification (UC) and representation proceedings.In addition, Rick has developed affirmative action plans for employers and defended compliance audits by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.

Wallace received his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Virginia.

This Lunch & Learn is the second in a series about West Virginia's medical marijuana legislation, its implementation and the local business impact.

Jul 19    Brown Bag Concert - July 2017
The Brown Bag Concert is a free lunchtime concert in Davis Park, along the corner of Capitol and Lee Streets in Downtown Charleston. The July 19 concert will feature Highway Jones & Friends.

Sponsored by American Medical Facilities Management, local musicians perform in the park 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month May through October. The Brown Bag Concerts are planned in coordination with American Federation of Musician’s Local 136. 

Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch, grab takeout from a Downtown Charleston restaurant or purchase on-site from local vendors. Tables and chairs will be setup for those attending.

The lunchtime concerts stems from the Imagine Charleston Downtown Redevelopment Plan. The concerts are designed to showcase the talent of local musicians, encourage people to get away from their desk at the lunch hour and put a spotlight on the green space in Downtown Charleston.

Jul 20    Enterprise Truck Rental Ribbon Cutting Celebration
Enterprise Truck Rental will mark the opening of its first location in West Virginia with a ribbon cutting celebration at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20.

“We’d like to thank Enterprise Truck Rental for its investment in the Kanawha Valley and congratulate the business on its new truck rental facility,” said Matt Ballard, CEO of the Charleston Area Alliance.

The new facility – located at 320 MacCorkle Ave. SE in Charleston – is centrally located near major highways, making it ideally situated for truck rental customers. Enterprise Truck Rental is a service of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, which has delivered local transportation solutions in West Virginia for more than 25 years.

The Enterprise Truck Rental Charleston facility offers a diverse rental fleet of box trucks, cargo vans and pickup trucks for both business and personal use.

"Through conversations with our existing corporate accounts in the state, it became clear that West Virginia was an ideal market to better serve our customers and grow our business by offering truck rental services," said Michael Hodges, Enterprise Group Truck Manager in West Virginia.

The 43,000-square-foot Charleston facility offers a diverse rental fleet of box trucks, cargo vans and pickup trucks for both business and personal use. In addition, Enterprise is working with local service shops and other area vendors to maintain the vehicles.

The new Charleston Enterprise Truck Rental branch is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.

Jul 20    ArtWalk - July 2017
Celebrating its 15th year, Downtown Charleston ArtWalk is a free self-guided walking tour of Charleston’s shops, galleries and businesses featuring regional art and performances. Typically held the third Thursday of each month, participating shops and organizations extend their hours for browsing, shopping and mingling.

For details about this month's ArtWalk, visit the Downtown Charleston ArtWalk website for the monthly participating venue map. Participating shops are located in Downtown Charleston and feature a variety of art – from paintings and sculptures to photography and music.

Attendees can stroll along at their own pace, dip in and out of stores and stop off along the way for a bite to eat at a downtown restaurant. Head down to Capitol Street for Downtown Streetfest block party Saturday, July 22, headlined Your Lucky Stars.

Meet up with friends and family between 4:30 and 9 p.m. for live music, food and drinks, kid's activities, pop-up shops and much more. Grab a bite to eat at your favorite downtown establishments and listen to some live music.

Jul 24    Fifth Third Bank Financial Empowerment Mobile
The Fifth Third Bank Financial Empowerment Mobile is rolling into Charleston Monday, July 24 to provide free financial and mortgage counseling and free credit reports. 

The Financial Empowerment Mobile, also known as an eBus, is a 40-foot long transit bus that has been retrofitted and turned into a mobile financial classroom. Powered by satellite technology, the eBus is equipped with Internet-accessible workstations and staffed by Fifth Third professionals. 

Fifth Third has teamed up with Alliance Credit Counseling to provide the credit reports and the Charleston Area Alliance to host the bus at its office, located at 1116 Smith St. in Charleston.

Get on board the Fifth Third eBus to:

  • Receive money management tips and budgeting help
  • Get information on affordable home loans and refinancing
  • Learn how to prevent foreclosure on your home

The easy to understand course is designed to help participants with their financial health, investment and planning and small business needs. Whether they are starting a business, managing a business's growth or buying a business, this Lunch & Learn will provide an overview of important small business lending options.
