May 5    Downtown Streetfest - May 2018

Kick off the summer events schedule with Downtown Streetfest Saturday, May 5 along Capitol Street between Lee and Quarrier Streets in downtown CharlestonCinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby, and Adelphia’s seventh anniversary celebration will all be taking place from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. 

The fun begins with Kentucky Derby Hat Contest at 5:30 pm, the Kentucky Derby live at 6:00 pm and then enjoy the tunes of Reggae band The Flex Crew from Columbus, Ohio, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm.

Meet up with friends and family for live music, food and drinks, kid's activities, and much more. Grab a bite to eat at your favorite downtown establishments and listen to some live music.

Title sponsor is City National Bank with supporting sponsors from Hendrickson & Long, Brewer & Company, Spriggs Distributing Company and Bud Light, GAI Consultants, AARP, Rock 105/The Mix, Tony The Tailor, 
Kanawha County Public Library and City of Charleston.

Downtown Streetfest block parties are also scheduled for Saturday, August 18 and Saturday, Sept. 15.

May 9    Brown Bag Concert - May 2018
The Brown Bag Concert is a free lunchtime concert taking place in Davis Park this month, along the corner of Capitol and Lee Streets in Downtown Charleston. The May 9 concert will feature the Ryan Kennedy Trio.

Sponsored by American Medical Facilities Management, local musicians perform in the park 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month May through October. The Brown Bag Concerts are planned in coordination with American Federation of Musician’s Local 136. 

Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch, grab takeout from a Downtown Charleston restaurant or purchase on-site from local vendors. Tables and chairs will be setup for those attending.

The lunchtime concerts stems from the Imagine Charleston Downtown Redevelopment Plan. The concerts are designed to showcase the talent of local musicians, encourage people to get away from their desk at the lunch hour and put a spotlight on the green space in Downtown Charleston.

May 10    Business After Hours - City National Bank 2018

Join us for the City National Bank Block Party Business After Hours on May 10 from 5-7 p.m. Network with colleagues and connect with business and community leaders at this monthly Alliance event. 

Hale Street will be filled with business building opportunities, plus plenty of food and drinks. Come experience the benefits of partnering with City National Bank, one of the most highly-rated community banks in the country. 

Registration is $15 for Alliance members and $25 for future members. Add $10 if registering fewer than 24 hours in advance. 

Invoicing is available for groups of 10 or more. No cancellation refunds within 48 hours of event.

May 17    ArtWalk - May 2018
Celebrating its 16th year, Downtown Charleston ArtWalk is a free self-guided walking tour of Charleston’s shops, galleries and businesses featuring regional art and performances. Typically held the third Thursday of each month, participating shops and organizations extend their hours for browsing, shopping and mingling.

For details about this month's ArtWalk, visit the Downtown Charleston ArtWalk website or visit the ArtWalk Facebook page for the monthly participating venue map. Participating shops are located in Downtown Charleston and feature a variety of art – from paintings and sculptures to photography and music.

Attendees can stroll along at their own pace, dip in and out of stores and stop off along the way for a bite to eat at a downtown restaurant. This well-loved family-friendly event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. and attracts art aficionados as well as folks who just want to get out and try something new.

May 24    Elevations with Paige Lavender, Senior Editor Breaking News, HuffPost

Join the Charleston Area Alliance for our first Elevations event of the year on May 24, 2018 featuring keynote speaker Paige Lavender, Senior Editor Breaking News, HuffPost.

Paige is a Chesapeake, West Virginia native and completed her undergraduate degree in News-Editorial Journalism from West Virginia University. She earned her Master's degree in Interactive Journalism from American University. Paige has also served as Senior Politics Editor and Assignment Editor at HuffPost, reporting on everything from terror attacks to elections.

Paige has moved from The Daily Athenaeum at WVU as a student all the way to the national media stage.  Please  join us for this exciting program brought to you by the Charleston Area Alliance and sponsored by Dow.
