Advocates for a Safe water System is an all-volunteer community organization that formed during the 2014 water crisis. Since then, we have pushed for and obtained a Public Service Commission investigation into WV American Water's response to the 2014 Elk River spill; we intervened at the Public Service Commission to oppose WV American Water's request for a 28% rate hike; and we have engaged hundreds of citizens in advocating for a safe water system.
Local businesses have lost millions of dollars as a result of the 2014 water crisis and subsequent main breaks. A strong local economy depends on safe water.
We are advocating for the creation of a locally owned, public water system in the Kanawha Valley to replace West Virginia American Water. We believe that creating a public water system is the only way to have a water system that is accountable to the priorities and needs of our community.
