Two dozen local businesses are currently working to design and create custom putt-putt holes for the Charleston Area Alliance second Downtown Open pop-up miniature golf course, presented by Central Van and Storage.

The finished holes will be set up along the sidewalks and greenspaces in Downtown Charleston to create a one-of-a kind course June 24 – July 8. Putt-putt players play for free, bringing their own putters and balls from home or borrowing the golf gear from local businesses.

“Our business sponsors’ creativity and execution drive this event,” said Susie Salisbury, the Alliance’s vice president of community development. “Whether your putt-putt hole is a work of art or intended to simply promote your company, this event helps create a lively downtown Charleston. Downtown Open gives locals and visitors a reason to explore the area, showcases local companies and provides free entertainment to families and friends.”

The Alliance collaborated with Ben Franklin Career and Technical Center Building Construction Program to build the 10-foot unfinished putt-putt platforms as part of the school’s simulated workforce program. The golf platforms were then handed over to local business sponsors, allowing them six weeks to craft their miniature golf design, adding in carpet, obstacles and décor.

Last year City National Bank created a miniature version of its Hale Street location with the golf ball traveling through the branch’s drive-thru, ZMM Architects & Engineers built a replica of the redesigned Charleston Civic Center and Delfine’s Jewelry modeled its golf hole after the Wizard of Oz’s yellow brick road – complete with ruby red slippers.
