Lunch & Learn Series Prepares Businesses and Entrepreneurs for the Legalization of Medical Marijuana

The Charleston Area Alliance is hosting a series of Lunch & Learn workshops about the recently adopted West Virginia Medical Cannabis Act, which will change the law on medical marijuana use and employee drug testing and will launch a medical marijuana industry in the Mountain State.
West Virginia’s medical marijuana law goes into effect July 5, 2017 and will be fully implemented July 1, 2019.
“Whether you’re an employer concerned about drug usage and drug testing in the workplace or a potential start-up eyeing the future medical marijuana market in the state, we want to prepare local businesses and entrepreneurs for the legalization of medical marijuana,” said Matt Ballad, president
and CEO of the Charleston Area Alliance.
Matt Simon, New England Political Director for the Marijuana Policy Project, will present a Lunch & Learn at noon Wednesday, June 14 at the Alliance about the state’s medical cannabis law, how it compares to legislation in other states and the potential impacts to the business community. A West Virginia native, Simon advocates for marijuana policy reform in several New England states. He lobbied in support of New Hampshire’s medical cannabis law and Vermont’s decriminalization law, both of which passed in 2013, and continues to build public support for ending marijuana prohibition.
Richard M. Wallace, labor attorney and shareholder at Littler Mendelson, will present the second Lunch & Learn on medical marijuana use and employee drug testing at noon Wednesday, July 12 at the
Alliance. Wallace will discuss the West Virginia medical marijuana law and the West Virginia Safer Workplace Act, which provides greater latitude for employers to drug test employees, and offer practical advice for implementing policies and procedures in organizations to ensure compliance with the overlapping obligations contained in these statutes and other relevant state and federal laws.
Lunch & Learn registration is $15 for Alliance members and $20 for future Alliance members and includes a boxed lunch. Seating is limited.
Additional Lunch & Learn workshops will be scheduled in the upcoming months on the to-be-established regulatory system and the medical cannabis industry for prospective
growers, researchers and processors.
