Urban Living Week to Show off Downtown Charleston’s Historic & Contemporary Spaces

Ever peered in a vacant storefront window or looked up to a downtown condominium curious about the space and its use?
Make plans to attend the Charleston Area Alliance Urban Living Week Oct. 17-19, celebrating the reasons to live, work and play in downtown Charleston.
Tour new and updated downtown residential units at Generation Charleston’s Loft Walk 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17; check out downtown’s most historic commercial buildings and lesser-known office spaces at Space Walk 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18 and dip in and out of downtown stores and galleries during ArtWalk 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.
Urban Living Week events are all free and open to the public.
“Urban Living Week is an exciting way to see many of the new and updated places to live and work downtown,” said Lesli Forbes, the Alliance’s vice president of marketing and development. “Whether you are looking for a spot to call home or simply interested in the urban development happening in Charleston, Urban Living Week events are a way to see downtown’s most unique and interesting spaces – all in one week. This is an exclusive opportunity to learn more about Charleston’s growing urban development options.”
In its ninth year, Generation Charleston’s Loft Walk highlights the uniqueness of downtown residential units. The tour offers something for everyone – from young professionals and empty nesters looking to live downtown, as well as those interested in historic preservation, interior design and urban living. Start the tour at Recovery Sports Grill Charleston and walk or board a KRT Trolley to visit participating properties. Residential tour stops include: The Virginian Building at 814 Virginia St; Park View Lofts at 1214 Smith St., 1108 Kanawha Blvd. E., among others.
In its inaugural year, Space Walk, presented by GAI Consultants, is designed for the intellectually curious as well as enterprising entrepreneurs. The self-guided walking tour will take you into a variety of downtown digs, including many hidden gems and blank spaces primed for renovation. Commercial tour stops include:

- 180 – 182 Summers. St., (former B&B Loans) a three-story commercial brick building built in 1918 with decorative cornice;
- 209 Hale St. (former Strand), a two-story commercial building built in 1935 with a gable slate roof and a modern storefront;
- 123 Summers St. (former Capitol Theatre), a Neo-Classical Revival theater building built in 1912;
- 118 Capitol St. (originally the S. Spencer Moore Company), a four-story Italianate-style building built in 1890 with brick and limestone detailing; and
- 232 Capitol St. (Capitol Center), a three-story building built in 1925 with pronounced panel effect with corbeled cornice caps.Property managers will be at all the participating Loft Walk and Space Walk tour stops to walk you through the building and answer any questions.
